TCWT April: Oh Romeo…

tcwt-3

Okay, so once a week ever since April started I’ve had a mini panic attack that i’d missed my post. Then i’d remember, oh wait, I’m later this month… 24th… righhhttt…. And move on with my life.

Of course, as soon as the 23rd rolled around, when i should have been writing, and did start, on my post things got very very very crazy. My prom was the 24th, I had a full day of college visit, rowing practice, and a museum visit the 25th. I had an all day boat race Sunday from 5 am when I left the house until 8 pm when i returned.

So, yeah, this is 4 days late.

The plot for this month is… *drum roll*

β€œWrite a letter to aΒ fictional couple.”

Dear Katara and Zuko,

Why? Just… why? After all you guys had been through in the series, you truly should have ended happily together. Katara, I’m sorry to say this, but Aang is not for you darling. He’s a child more like a cousin to you, I can tell. And Zuko, what are you thinking? Mai is… Mai. She doesn’t deserve you.

I know you both started out bitterly hating each other. Katara, you blamed him for your mother’s death. Zuko, you used her as bait to capture the Avatar. But then under Ba Sing Se… you both felt that connection. You’d both lost your mothers because of that war, you both carried scars you’d rather leave behind.

You to are perfect in that you balance each other out.

You bring out the best in each other.

If only this ship had actually happened…

Your most shipping fan,

Originally I was going to do more, but one will have to do.

Besides, I can always post others if I feel like it. πŸ˜‰

TCWT February: Music For the Pen

tcwt-3

The topic for this month is AWESOME!

It is basically about life.

Well, alright, technically Music, but for me a great deal of life is music.

The question is β€œHow does music relate to your writing?”

Music inspires my writing a great deal, and I use it in different ways.

Sometimes I’ll listen to a creepy song for no particular reason, and write a short story. If I’m writing a nice long novel then I’ll like to mix it up. Constantly.

I have been working on my novel for three years. Each year it’s something new.

Every April – May I tend to get sucked into a Scottish or celtic playlist for my writing.

During July and late summer/early fall I get more into scifi soundtracks.

November, movie soundtracks (hunger games, LOTR, Divergent, things like that.)

Around December – March I am more into the modern pop and pop/rock. Recently I’ve been listening to Meghan Trainer, Ariana Grande, Imagine Dragons, Avicci, Taylor Swift, and all that fun stuff.

Basically, my writing music has to do at least two of the following four things.

1. Reflect the Season

2. Connect to the level of action what I am writing contains.

3. Connect my to the original idea for the story/scene/whatever.

4. Drown out any annoying siblings, so I typically avoid quiet whisper acoustic stuff.

Example time!

When I was in the basic story development/writing stage I listened to a lot of Scottish/Celtic music. It reflected the feel and natural landscape I wanted my novel to have

When I was trying to get in touch withΒ my inner romantic I listened to the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie adaption soundtrack (all scenes written during that time have been recently eliminated do to reversal of story. The scenes were good though. Cheesy, but with editing could haveΒ been quite good… ).

Then I think I just started listening to whatever was new that I liked to drown out siblings, and of course during December it was a lot of Christmas Carols.

During editing it almost always is whatever is new. if i’m writing something for the rifts time, the music has to reflect the story and natural background, but if all I’m doing Β is tweaking and proofreading I’ll listen to something bouncy and upbeat and most certainly not classical.

When I write, I attempt to stir up all the emotions I want my readers to feel (though I doubt they feel as exhilarated as I do when a group of bandits burn down a farm house and murder a family while one MC holds back other from racing in without a plan.).

So music relates to my writing in every way. i don’t think i could accomplish half the writing I do without music. It connects me to my fantasy worlds, and help me disconnect myself from reality.

How do you use music in your writing? Doe sit bring your ideas roaring, or close the floodgate of your imagination? Is music even necessary to drown out crazy siblings?

Let me know in the comments below your thoughts, likes, and dislikes about this post, or music in general.

Also remember to check out the rest of the posts in this month’s chain!

TCWT November Blog Chain (Late)

Wow, this is late guys, sorry.
I got kind of caught up with stuff.

This month’s prompt is very different from the usual ones. It challenges the participants to let individual words express themselves, rather then sentences or paragraph or stories.
It also begs a question that has a hundred and one million different answers.
I hope you enjoy (or at least can understand) mine.

Here is the prompt for the November Blog chain.

Use pictures and individual words to show what, to you, is the essence of being a teenager.

TCWT September Blog Chain

β€œWhat are your favorite book beginnings and/or endings?”

I think quite a lot of pressure is put on authors these days when it comes to the beginnings and endings for their books.
The beginning has to be exciting, and immediately grab the readers (why do people have such short attention spans these days? I don’t want to throw my MC in a well in the first chapter…) and the ending has to be satisfying, preferably with very little bloodshed from the main characters (I wonder why they want that…)

So today, I’m supposed to share with you some of my favorite beginnings and endings.

I like nice little simple beginnings that give us a sense of the character’s life and personality before the adventure finds them, and makes us smile.

So of course, top of the list, my number one favorite beginnings are from the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
I love the simple beauty of shire life that is shown; the descriptions of Baggends and Bilbo and Frodo’s quiet life before Gandalf arrives and whisks them away on daring quest to defeat a dragon or a dark lord.
I love starting a story right there, with the quiet life of the hero.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit”

Nothing better.

There are, however, some close seconds.

King of Attolia: King of Attolia starts with a wedding feast of a queen and her new king. It is clear from the start that there is a lot of suppressed rage at the marriage. Two months after the wedding, in the first chapter of the story, a common solider slugs the king.

Pride and Prejudice: “It is a fact universally acknowledged that a young man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

Jane Eyre: The beginning of Jane Eyre is probably one of the most depressing things ever, only surpassed by Oliver Twist. Three cousins picking on a lesser cousin? And not just teasing, but going at her with fists? How depressing.
Odd I like it… but I do. I like these little stories that start in the depths of sorrow, but at the end the mistreated figure rises above it.

Little Princess: Seeing a trend yet? This story starts with a carriage carrying the most loving father and daughter known to literature to the place where they will be separated at last. I love the descriptions of the day, and the school, and Miss Minchin because they are all very simple and childlike, describing them as Sarah would see them.

Now, I’d better go onto endings.

My top favorite ending of all time isn’t the actual ending of the book, but the end of a character, the end of the war, and the beginning of the end of the book.
In Inheritance by Christopher Paolini, I came across one of the greatest things ever.
A villain dying from enlightenment.
Galbatorix isn’t redeemed, or killed by the sword. He dies when his mind’s eye is open and he sees every dark deed he’s done, and feels the overwhelming sorrow and pain of his victims… he dies from knowledge. With every dark deed he had done in life, he killed himself.

Now for the runner ups.

The King of Attolia: Oh yeah, it’s here πŸ™‚ I love this book, seriously. After all the problems are resolved, the greatest thing happens in the end. The King becomes King. The royal guard never really believed in him (remember me saying a soldier slugged the kind?). They treated him as they would a royal (except that one time..), but they didn’t look at him as a king. In the end, Eugendides truly becomes King of Attolia, earning all of the guards’ respect. It is an amazing scene.

Allegiant: Yes, I liked this one. Heartbreaking, of course! But satisfying, mostly. I won’t give major spoilers, but I’d say the end displays what it truly means to love one’s family, and to forgive. If it had done so with slightly less depression or heartbreak, it might have been better. However, I think it was better then most people claim.

Little Princess: Of course! How can I not like the end? It is so sweet, and happy… Sarah is taken away from the nasty school, and Becky goes with her, and even the little homeless girl from that one street has a home. I love it πŸ™‚

And those are it. Those are probably my favorite beginning sand endings.
Some of them take a bit long to get to any action, some start straight out. Some may start with someone confined to their quarters, while others outside of a hole in a ground.

However they start, they are amazing stories.

They got listed here, didn’t they? πŸ˜‰

Go check what over people are saying!

TCWT August Blog Chain

I’m doing a blog chain! I have always wanted to do one of these!

β€œWhat characters are you most like?”

Once again, you have a lot of freedom with this topic. While the character(s) you choose should hopefully come from a published work, it can be from pretty much any type; book, movie, musical, short story, poem, etc. characters are all fair game.

What Characters am I most like?

Yikes, where to begin….

Okay, well, let’s start with a no-brainer that Erin will role her eyes over and say “well duh!”…

Siri

Siri Tachi

Siri Tachi is a character created by Jude Watson for the Jedi apprentice series. She is a jedi padawan who becomes Obi-Wan’s best friend during his apprenticeship. She’s only slightly younger then him, but skips 2 classes to be at his level.
She is a sarcastic, pushy, headstrong, and fiery jedi.
It’s her mannerisms and characters traits I connect with most, over her actual life experiences. I wish I had her life, but that’s pretty much all I can do.
I have her temper, her tendency to act without thinking, and her ability to conform to any situation. I also have her sharp tongue.

Attolia

Attolia

Attolia is the title of the ruler of Attolia in the Queen’s Thief series. Once crowned, the rulers of the three different kingdoms that take center stage in these almost Greek epic like stories, are pretty much only referred to by their titles.
Her lesser known name is Irene.
Okay, spoiler alert, but this character starts out as more of a villain in the first two books.
In the second book though, you get to see things from her perspective, and you realize she’s not so much a villain as a queen struggling to hold together a traitorous country as the sole ruler. And a women ruler at that.
She had been the subject of court intrigue since a child, and only came out of the shadows when both her father and older brother died, putting her on the throne, and in the middle of a big split between her country’s noblemen. Each one had their own agenda, and each one wanted her to be used for their own personal gain.
It took quite a bit of craftiness from her side to take control on her own, and break all the strings that were being pushed on her. It took years for her to balance the national treasury from the noblemen’s spending, and to shove it into people’s heads that she was ruler, not them, and that she was not marrying anytime soon.
In short, Irene is a queen who’s heart wasn’t stone, but which circumstances had made firm and resolute.

ender

Ender Wiggin

Andrew (or Ender, as he likes to be called) Wiggin is just a little kid at the start of the first book. In the movie, he’s a bit older at the start, but that doesn’t have anything to do with Ender himself.
Ender is a third. he’s a government approved third child, which makes him immediately a target and an anomaly.
In his futuristic world, aliens have attacked earth on two separate occasions. there can not be a third. So, the world comes together and creates a battlefleet. But they need a commander. And so start the schools. Battle schools. Those who pass certain requirements on earth are sent to the satellite battle school which orbits earth. There they start a whole different level of training. they become soldiers there. Not just soldiers, leaders. What I love about the school (umm… besides the training 12 year olds to attack and fight a war part. That isn’t as good.) is the leadership, and the leadership skills Ender possess.
I love leadership. I love reading about… I love the opportunity to be a leader.
I was a Civil Air Patrol flight commander for the last month before I had to move from my old Squadron, and I have to confess, it was the best position I have ever had and I was just flying high.
So I really connected with Ender’s abilities as a leader. And I think I learned more about how to be a leader from Ender’s Game then from my actual Leadership course. Though I suppose that’s debatable…

Jo

Jo March

Ah! My childhood hero! Jo has always been my favorite March sister. She’s a tomboy, a writer, and a playacter (at least in the March home’s attic). She is just so me, and I’ve always loved her for that!
She has a younger sister who tries way to hard to be like her older sister. I sadly, am minus a little Beth with no faults to put her kindly in her place.
She also dreams of travelling to far off lands, but is for quite a while stuck at home.
Though, she couldn’t really call it stuck, for she does love dearly her little family and home, even if she rarely says so outright.

Max

Maximum Ride

The first book I read in this series was The Final Warning. My absolute favorite is Max. Maximum, or Max as she called, is the leader of a “flock” of genetically enhanced humans who contain 2% of bird genes. I.e. they have wings. She’s the “big sister”, the leader of these kids. She can be bossy, short tempered, but always has the needs of the flock at heart. Sometimes the others don’t see it, or get tired of having an older sister, but it’s not long before they realize how much they need their over bearing Max to see them through.

And those are it. Those are the characters I am most like.
In truth there may be a couple more, but who wants to listen to me list off characters I am like all day?
Instead, go check who else is doing the blog chain!
